How do hot water dispensers work?
Hot water dispensers are a modern renovation that has completely transformed the way modern offices and homes operate.
All that time you spent standing around waiting for the kettle to boil for a cuppa? That issue is eliminated with our hot water dispensers. However, you may be wondering how, exactly, they work.
Many of the questions we are asked are along the lines of ‘How does a hot water dispenser constantly produce boiling water on command?’ Today, we’ll be answering all of your questions so that you can understand the process behind these small, powerful machines and how they will benefit your office.
At Cool Water Company, we install plumbed-in hot water dispensers across Liverpool and the North West, as well as in areas such as London.
How do hot water dispensers operate?
In simple terms, a hot water dispenser receives water directly from your mains supply, treats it, heats it to boiling point, and then maintains a consistent temperature, allowing you to enjoy instant hot drinks in seconds.
Here’s a closer look at the process:
1. From mains to filter
Our professional team of installers will come and connect your hot water dispenser directly to the mains supply in your home or office.
Once it’s installed, the water will filter in from the mains supply to the dispenser, passing through cartridges that have built-in filters to remove impurities and improve taste.
This includes pre-filtration and activated carbon filters to reduce chlorine and odours, as well as limescale, microplastics, and volatile organic compounds.
2. Heating and holding temperature
After the filtration process, the water moves into a small, well-insulated boiler tank where it’s heated by an electric element (often rated around 3 kW).
The water is heated to around 90–96 °C for hot drinks, and a built-in thermostat maintains this set point, so the next cup is ready straight away. After the water is heated, it doesn’t require any further filtration since the heat removes any contaminants.
3. Dispensing the hot water
Hot water dispensers will either come with a nozzle tap or a button that you press to distribute the water into the cup.
At Cool Water Company, our taps come equipped with a child safety lock to prevent burns, a hot water switch, and a removable drip tray.
Our boiling water dispensers can be used to prepare tea, coffee, soups, and noodles in seconds, thereby limiting downtime, reducing energy usage, and minimising water waste.
Is a hot water dispenser cheaper than a kettle?
So, we know that a hot water dispenser produces boiling water quicker than a kettle. But is it more cost-effective?
Whether you work in a small office with a few workers or a large office with a large team of employees, it’s no secret that a lot of water is used each day to produce multiple hot drinks and meals.
While hot water dispensers are more costly upfront (typically starting at £50 and going up to as high as £300+), kettles use around 2.5–3 kW per boil compared to 0.5–1.0 kWh per day for hot water dispensers. Less energy means lower energy bills.
However, for very light use, such as businesses that work from home most days, a kettle is a smarter investment.
